Moving to Syracuse, New York, after five years as a software engineer in New York State’s Capital District, I found that a surprisingly high percentage of the available jobs in Central New York are contract positions, with minimal or no health care or other benefits. These days, more and more of the small and medium-sized local companies (of the kind I would prefer to work for) seem to be finding that basic employee benefits of this kind are beyond their financial reach. This seems like an unfortunate trend — but perhaps it’s not yet an irreversible one.
