Chapter Building

What Can I Do Right Now to Begin Building a UP Chapter?

Here are some basic ideas for beginning to form the base of a UP Chapter in your area:

Don't call a meeting of people you don't know. Start by “networking” with folks you think might be really interested.  Informal coffee with 2-3 friends is a good start.  Tell them about UP and encourage them to do the same with other friends and possible members.

Create local website content.  Ask us for template help and guidance on using the UP logo.

Research local resources — everything from food pantries to United Way and credit counseling groups. Look into local networking groups for the laid off and see if any are worthwhile. List these resources, with your comments, on the website.

Encourage the people you are networking with to write up their stories for the local and national websites.

Create small get-togethers. These can be in the form of book clubs — with speaker phone participation by UP authors if desired — or maybe watching “The Office” on TV or documentaries including “The Corporation” and “Waging a Living.”

Collect names and email addresses as you go along and always take the opportunity to sign up a new member.

When you've got 10 or more active members, think of staging a public event in coordination with UP - with a UP speaker or a film. Several relevant documentaries are in the pipeline and we could be the first to show them in many cities. Screenings should be followed by discussion and of course more name-collecting.

When you reach a threshold of 25 members, start serious advocacy on UP issues in coordination UP at the national level.
